چکیده

Fisheries regulations driven by environmental concerns would not only directly affect fisheries sectors but also tend to indirectly influence other sectors through intersectoral input–output linkages. This paper examines both backward and forward linkages of Hawaii’s fisheries sectors to the rest of the economy, and based on this evaluates the potential economic impacts of longline fishing regulations in Hawaii. We find that Hawaii’s fisheries sectors have strong linkages to the rest of the economy; regulations on them will thus have profound economic impacts. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Prototype Agent Based Fishery Management Model of Hawaii’s Longline Fishery

The recent advent of agent-based modeling (ABM) and the availability of software platforms for its implementation offer a powerful alternative to model the spatio-temporal behaviors of a fishery with the consideration of heterogeneity and interactivity. This paper describes a prototype agent-based fishery management model of Hawaii’s longline fishery. The model simulates the daily fishing activ...

A Poisson and negative binomial regression model of sea turtle interactions in Hawaii’s longline fishery

Sea turtle interactions with the longline fishery in Hawaii have become a serious concern in recent years. Various measures, including a swordfish harvest ban, have been adopted to protect sea turtles. This study explores the factors and degree of sea turtle interactions with Hawaii’s pelagic longline fishery, i.e. the production of undesirable outputs in the pursuit of an economic activity, in...

Regional Economic Impacts of Reductions in Fisheries Production: A Supply-Driven Approach

Much debate and subsequent confusion have recently been generated regarding the economic importance of the longline fisheries for tuna and swordfish in Hawaii. Depending on the methodology employed, the measures of the economic importance of these fisheries to Hawaii can vary significantly. This paper attempts to provide an assessment of the alternative measures and their implications for fishe...

The bottom line: An investigation of the economic, cultural and social costs of industrial longline fishing in the Pacific and the benefits of sustainable use marine protected areas

Industrial longline fishing can be understood as a case study of the cultural, economic, environmental and social impacts of unsustainable fishing technology. While much attention has been attributed to the impact of industrial longlines on the marine ecosystem, little is known about the impact of longline fishing on local food security, employment, cultural belief systems and traditions, reven...

Regulatory Impact Analysis for Pelagic Fishery Management in Hawaii: A Spatially Disaggregated Nonlinear Programming Model

A major challenge confronting pelagic fisheries management in Hawaii is to simultaneously achieve two different and possibly conflicting objectives: conserving protected species (sea turtles and sea birds) while maintaining a viable fishery. To illustrate the difficulty of achieving these objectives, recent regulatory policy—the prohibition of all shallow longline sets (that primarily target sw...
